The 2008 Lazers Cup was held this past weekend at the Baseball Soccer Complex in Peachtree City. 80 teams competed in 15 divisions over the course of the two-day event. Three Lazers Select teams were crowned champions and three others finished as finalists.
The Lazers ’97 Girls Black and Lazers ’97 Girls White won tight contests in the finals. The Lazers ’98 Girls Black came back from a loss on Saturday to win their final match 4-0, which led to their group title. The Lazers ’96 Girls Black fought through several injuries over the course of the weekend and fell just a little short on Sunday by a score of 3-1. The Lazers ’96 Boys Black and Lazers ’98 Boys Black also came up just a little short in their title bids on Sunday.

Lazers ’97 Girls Black
The ’97 Lazers Girls Black opened their weekend on Saturday with two 2-0 victories over Columbus SC and Stars SC Diamond. The Lazers Girls’ controlled possession for most of the match getting goals from Martha Trimbach, Taylor Snell, Carly Pressgrove, and Sydney Johnson. The defense, which consists of a backline of Emily Perez, Claire Williams, Tarna Zander-Velloso, and Hayli Verbanic played cool and steady in front of goalkeeper, Paige Betsill.
On Sunday, the morning began with a 2-0 victory over the ’97 Auburn Thunder Girls. The rematch in the final remained scoreless with both teams having several chances on goal until an opportunity came with seven minutes remaining in the match. Lazers’ Johanna Goldblatt was taken down inside the penalty area, which led to Martha Trimbach converting a penalty kick and a 1-0 victory in the final.

Lazers ’97 Girls White
The ’97 Lazers Girls White started the weekend with a bang. The ’97 Girls White scored three goals in the first 11 minutes of their first match of the day and played strong defense led by Sarah McBride, Laura Fincher, Lauren Chaphe, and Harley Obsitnik. The final results against NASA ’11 and NASA O’Reilly were 4-0 and 5-0 respectively. Goals were scored by Taylor Butler, Katie Slattery, Riley Clark, Lauren Yoss, and Brianna File.
On Sunday morning, the ’97 White played a tough game against Macon United and tied 2-2 with strong play from Sarah Mendes and another match on the way later in the afternoon.
Later in the afternoon, the rematch between the two squads had the Lazers Girls take a 4-1 lead with just 10 minutes to play. Macon refused to give up, scoring two goals in the final 10 minutes, which left them just a little short in their comeback. The Lazers ’97 Girls White won their championship game by a final score of 4-3.

Lazers ’98 Girls Black
The ’98 Lazers Girls Black opened their weekend on Saturday with a 4-0 victory over ’98 Coweta Cannons Blue. The game remained close for the first three quarters of the match. The Cannons made several key saves defensively and tested goalkeepers, Ashlyn Walloch and Hollyn Shadinger, on a few occasions. Carson Silbert scored three goals and Olivia King added another for the victors.
In the afternoon, the Lazers ’98 Girls Black came out a bit sluggish. After holding the game to a 1-1 tie at halftime, the defense broke down and gave up five goals in the second half, which led to a 6-3 defeat.
On Sunday, the girls bounced back. The Lazers ’98 Girls Black played well in a much needed 4-1 victory to get them back into the hunt. The team received some help during the course of the day, which led to a final match of the round-robin tournament to determine the champion. The Lazers defense played well for 50 minutes led by Katie MacLauchlan, Olivia Krug, and Dylan Patterson. A tireless effort in the midfield from Camille Johnson and Olivia King, and Carson Silbert’s third hat trick in four games all helped contribute to the 4-0 victory over the Alpharetta Ambush Gray.
